Alternatives to conventional proteins mapped out visually

What alternatives are there to meat and dairy? What are their pros and cons? This interactive knowledge map, made out of information bubbles, visualises the outcomes of the recent European Parliament Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) study ‘Alternative protein sources for food and feed’.

The infographic shows and assesses four alternative sources of protein:

  • algae
  • insects
  • microbial fermentation
  • cultured meat

list of alternatives for meat, alternative proteins

These alternatives are then compared to the conventional protein sources they may replace in terms of:

  • energy needs
  • environmental impacts
  • nutritional content
  • their potential to be used as substitutes to conventional proteins in food and feed across the EU

You can zoom into the bubbles for new layers of information.

The map was produced in cooperation with Kontextlab (Munich, Germany), a small company that developed software to visualise mind map structures with multiple layers.
