Scientist: Juan Picos

Juan Picos profileProf. Juan Picos is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Vigo (Faculty of Forestry, Spain).

He combines teaching with active research in forestry, wildfire prevention, and sustainable resource management. He holds a Forest Engineering degree from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1996) and a PhD from the University of Vigo (2004), recognised by Fundación Mapfre for its relevance to wildfire risk and insurance.

He has held key leadership roles within his faculty, including Secretary, Director, and currently Deputy Director, and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. His work spans national and European R&D projects such as FIREPOCTEP+, USE4FOREST, and RESONATE, and includes participation in international expert groups like UNECE/FAO task forces and EIP-AGRI focus groups. He has also contributed to the profession through leadership roles in the Spanish Chartered Forestry Engineers and the Spanish Society of Forest Sciences.
