Professor Martine Vrijheid is an environmental epidemiologist and head of the ISGlobal Childhood and Environment Programme. Her research focuses on the impact of environmental exposures on child health and development. Professor Vrijheid coordinated the Horizon 2020 funded HELIX project, spearheading the push for a more holistic exposome-based approach to studying co-existing exposures and their joint effects on molecular responses and child health. She is continuing this research as leader of the new Horizon 2020 project ATHLETE.

Studying the exposome: ‘On the front line for people and the planet’
Climate and public health cannot be considered separately. The scientific community is increasingly talking about the need to study the so called exposome (the sum of all environmental factors we are exposed to) with the same level of attention with which the human genome has been studied up to now. A new European science network aims to respond to this multidisciplinary challenge.
