Scientist: Mel Slater

Mel Slater profileProfessor Mel Slater is a Distinguished Investigator at the University of Barcelona in the Department of Clinical Psychology. He is also an active member of the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona. He was a professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies from 2006 to 2017. Professor Slater is also a co-Director of the Event Lab (Experimental Virtual Environments for Neuroscience and Technology).

His background is in computer science in the field of computer graphics and virtual reality. He was working at the Department of Computer Science at University College London when he founded the Virtual Environments and Computer Graphics group. Professor Slater’s research in the UK was mainly supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and in Barcelona by the EU’s seventh framework programme for research, the Horizon Europe programmes and two European Research Council Advanced Grants.

He was an Immersive Fellow with London’s Digital Catapult in 2017 and 2018. He was also a Research Award Winner of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2021, and was elected to the Virtual Reality Academy, which is part of the Visualization and Graphics Technical Community of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2022. Professor Slater is the coordinator of the European Metaverse Research Network.
