Research and innovation for the future: Gender equality driving science, society, and democracy

Women only count for a third of researchers in the European Union. This gender gap isn’t just unfair – it limits Europe’s capacity to innovate and compete globally.

When women are underrepresented in research and innovation, we lose diverse perspectives that could lead to better solutions for society’s challenges. This STOA workshop brought together researchers, policymakers, and gender equality experts to examine current barriers, share effective strategies and chart a path toward a more inclusive research ecosystem where Europe can fully realise its innovative potential. The STOA event was part of the European Gender Equality Week, which took place from 3 to 9 November 2025 in the European Parliament.
