Young journalists from across Europe gathered in the European Parliament in Brussels on 24-26 June 2025 for the European Science-Media Hub (ESMH) Summer School on ‘Science communication in the digital age’: three days of workshops, seminars and panels with experienced science journalists and experts to learn how to navigate the challenges and opportunities of science communication. Opening session ‘Science journalism in the digital age: Challenges and opportunities’
Science journalism is facing significant challenges in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. The proliferation of disinformation poses a substantial threat, as false or misleading claims can spread quickly and be difficult to correct. The crowded and often polarised online environment makes it increasingly hard for science journalists to maintain credibility and reach their audiences with accurate information.
The shift in media consumption, with many now relying on social media as a primary news source, also requires science journalists to adapt and find new ways to engage with their audiences. Furthermore, the growing influence of artificial intelligence and algorithms adds an extra layer of complexity.
This year’s ESMH Summer School focused on ‘Science communication in the digital age’, and aimed to help young journalists to navigate such complexities. The event included workshops, thematic panels and training sessions with experienced journalists, communication specialists, researchers and policymakers on topics such as artificial intelligence, social media, and mis- and disinformation.
The ESMH Summer School for young science journalists is the first of its kind in the European Parliament.
