Academic freedom in the EU – defending a pillar of democracy

At this year’s STOA‘s high-level conference ‘Perspectives on academic freedom in Europe and beyond’, participants and speakers such as European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva explored how academic freedom can be best supported. In the video below you can watch some of the highlights of the conference.

Academic freedom is a fundamental EU value and it’s under threat: a slow but steady erosion across the EU. In order to defend this pillar of democracy, the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) is taking action. In 2022, STOA launched the Forum for Academic Freedom, whose annual high-level conference is a highlight of the year. This year’s gathering took place on 5 February 2025 in the European Parliament’s library room and brought together decisions makers, experts and academia.
