Towards a legal definition of academic freedom

Academic freedom is a fundamental right. In many places it is under attack and needs to be safeguarded. The European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) is a staunch defender of academic freedom in the EU. It set up a Forum for Academic Freedom in 2022.

In this interview, Michael Ignatieff discusses ways to enforce the protection of academic freedom in the EU. He is the former rector of the Central European University which was expelled from Budapest (Hungary) in 2019.
