Paulo Morgado
Paulo Morgado is an associate professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon (IGOT-ULisboa), an integrated researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies (CEG), and a member of the Associated Laboratory TERRA. He was a visiting researcher at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), University College London, and a visiting scholar at the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge.With over 25 years of experience in Geography, GIScience, and Urban and Regional Planning, Paulo has coordinated and contributed to numerous national and international research and innovation projects, including INTERREG, FP7, Horizon 2020, and Horizon Europe initiatives. He is the scientific coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project eMOTIONAL Cities, which pioneers the integration of environmental neuroscience, spatial data science, and urban planning to better understand how urban environments influence human health and well-being.
His research explores the complex interactions between people and their physical, digital, and hybrid environments, generating scientific evidence to support healthier, sustainable, and human-centred cities. His expertise spans Geographic Information Science (GIScience), GeoAI, spatial modelling, geocomputation, environmental neuroscience, digital twins, and smart and cognitive cities, with a particular interest in applying emerging technologies, including wearable sensing, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, to urban planning & design, and evidence-based decision-making.
