Open Science is the idea of disseminating knowledge as soon as it becomes available, using digital tools. It is a development that could greatly improve the quality of research and as such, it is a priority for the EU.

 

But Open Science doesn’t come without risks. In order to safeguard academic freedom and protect researchers and institutions it needs a code of ethics.

 

Could Open Science jeopardise academic freedom? And how can we mitigate this? Regulation through governance structures, codes of conduct and training are just some of the possibilities.

 

These issues were at the heart of the discussions at the last STOA Academic Freedom Roundtable.
