Long Covid: Current Realities, Future Directions

Long Covid, or post-COVID-19 Condition (PCC), has emerged as one of the most significant public health challenges of our time, affecting an estimated 400 million people worldwide.
Five years into the pandemic, while our understanding has deepened, Long Covid continues to impact millions of Europeans with debilitating symptoms that can lead to long-term disability.

The condition extends far beyond individual health consequences, affecting workforce participation, economic productivity, and placing considerable strain on healthcare systems across Europe.

With SARS-CoV-2 still circulating widely, coordinated European action on Long Covid is essential to address gaps in knowledge, improve treatment options, and provide comprehensive support to patients.

The STOA Panel organized a workshop on 30 September 2025 which brought together researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates to examine current scientific understanding, policy responses, and future strategies for addressing Long Covid across Europe.
