Europe stands at a pivotal moment for global research and innovation. As international competition intensifies and technological sovereignty becomes ever more crucial, the European Union faces the dual challenge of maintaining scientific excellence while enhancing its strategic autonomy and global competitiveness.
To address these challenges, the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) organised a summit in partnership with the G6 – the informal grouping of Europe’s six largest scientific research organisations. The summit, ‘ Shaping Europe’s Future: Research and innovation at the heart of European leadership’, took place on 4 June 2025 in the European Parliament’s library room in Brussels.
For the first time, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, attended a STOA event — marking a major moment for European research policy.
